The HP Slate…The Future of Computing?
Jan 7th
During yesterday’s CES Keynote Address, Steve Ballmer showed off a bad-arse little device, the HP Slate. It’s like an iPhone on steroids, with multitouch capabilities, etc. however it runs a Windows 7 instead of Apple’s iPhone OS of course. The little tablet device looks slick and if they can beat Apple to the punch, cause you know they have to be working on an iTablet, well they might just put a shot across Cupertino’s bow.
While the hardware looks amazing, I’m a bit concerned with the fact that it’s running Windows 7 and not some OS made for mobiles. This sort of device doesn’t need that much of an OS, just give me a good energy efficient OS with great media viewing applications, access to the internet, facebook, email, ability to read a book (like the Kindle Application Steve Demo’d) and some way to play a game or two when I want to.

Vizio’s XVT, now in the 3rd Dimension & the Ultrawide 58" XVTPro580CD
Jan 5th
Vizio today announced at CES a bevy of new products that will be released this year.
First up is a hot topic, 3D. Vizio’s XVT Line will be upgraded with 3D, but I don’t know about you but 65″ seems a bit small, no? That’s why Vizio will be introducing their new top-of-the-line XVT Behemoth this August in a Svelt 72″ variety.
But wait, there’s more. If you act now not only will you get 72″ of your wall painted a nice gloss black, you’ll also get, Internet Apps, and WirelessHD! What would you expect this to all cost? $7000? No. $5000? No. This CES Special will be available for the low price of $3499.
As if that announcement wasn’t big enough, Vizio will also be introducing the beauty you see above-left, the ultra-widescreen 58″ 21:9 aspect ratio, XVTPro580CD.

3DTV Sans Glasses……..maybe
Jan 4th
A company known as Magnetic 3D is introducing a trio of 3DTV’s at CES that don’t require glasses. While watching 3D without wearing the necessary glasses is the Holy Grail for 3D viewing, there has yet to be a screen like these that we believe is anywhere close to being ready for prime time. I guess we’ll have to wait and see how these screens from Magnetic 3D perform at CES.

Apple's Forced Hand
Feb 25th
Apple is getting more and more popular. In my opinion, they are now bigger than Microsoft. Well they are at least more popular and covered more in the media. That is another story and yet very much the reason why Apple’s hand has been forced lately. In January, Apple announced the much rumored iPhone. Heck even that name was forced. The iPhone was talked about so heavily, first on the Apple fanboy sites, and then in the main media, that Apple would have been stupid at that point to name it something else. Heck, they were forced to do a phone in my opinion.
Let’s back it up a bit though. Apple has changed the music industry so greatly it has garnered millions of followers and I’m sure millions of haters. As a result of being so huge, being the top dog in an industry, all eyes are on them. They move an inch and it creates massive waves in the industry, and at the very least in the media. So enter Apple’s Fall 2006 release of their new iPod nano. Revolutionary? No. Yes it looks cool. Yes Steve has a magical quality to his presentations where everyone is awestruck. The problem? There wasn’t much there. If Apple didn’t deliver, their stock holders would get mad, the stock price would drop, etc, etc. So they were forced to show something before it was ready. Out comes the iTV, now known as Apple TV. Steve gave a demo and the media was buzzing. The stock holders were happy and the price went up. Apples arms were twisted and hands were forced to show a product about 5 months before its release.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg, click through to see where Apple had their hand forced again.
