So after playing with FaceTime a bit, on the new iPhone 4 running iOS 4, I can easily see how this will change the way we communicate. That is, if it’s widely available and easy to start a conversation. That discussion and how people will use this service are for another post, right now I want to discuss a number of features that would be awesome if they were added to FaceTime (and soon).

With that let’s dive right into this list of missing features. Click through to continue reading after the break.

1. FaceTime over the Cell Network. Right now both iPhone 4′s need to be on a wifi network. Steve did mention beginning to work on allowing this to happen sometime in early 2011, so keep your fingers crossed on that. But if you’re like me and use this thing at work, a corporate firewall is a problem and FaceTime over a cellular network would be awesome.

2. FaceTime-to-Computer Calls. Almost every Mac computer for the last handful of years have shipped with a built-in video camera. The macs have been using a program called iChat for video calling other computers. Why Apple has two different platforms for video calling is anybody’s guess, but one that should be remedied quickly as it’s a super fast way of getting millions of devices on this FaceTime network.

3. FaceTime Voicemails. If FaceTime is a new way of making a phone call, but in video, why can’t I leave a FaceTime Message and a create an outgoing FaceTime message of me to prompt people to leave a message after the beep.

4. FaceTime Recording. The iPhone 4 can do video calling and it can record video. Why can’t I share a moment with somebody and record it at the same time? Both features are available separately.

5. FaceTime Photo Booth. The Mac has an app called Photo Booth where you can use special effects. You can alter the colors to look like it’s an x-ray, or even better you can make it look like you are really on the beach or in Paris instead of laying on your bed in your room that is messier than the back of your oven after Thanksgiving.

I know Apple is working to make it an open standard for others to use and I can easily see in the not too distant future there being Android, iPod touch, iPad, Windows Phone 7, Palm, and any other devices for that matter could on this system. But….

Just imagine the day where you’re hanging out in a club in Vegas and all of the sudden Beyonce shows up and gives an unscheduled performance. You FaceTime it over the cellular network to your friend in New York, who’s watching it fullscreen on their computer, all the while you’re recording it. Once it’s over, you edit it quickly in iMovie and post it to Facebook for everybody to see and enjoy. Then you leave a FaceTime Voicemail for your buddy, who decided to go play the slots instead of hitting the club with you. You leave a message saying they’re an idiot for missing such an epic performance by Beyonce, and because it’s a small club, you pass the phone to her to say a few choice words. She essentially says “Big mistake” and hangs up the call. Now, that’s what I call a killer FaceTime experience.

Last but not least, check out the iTunes link below, it’s a link to one of my favorite album at the moment from the British band Mumford & Sons. You most likely have heard their song, Little Lion Man. If you like them cool, buy’em; if not, at least you checked it out and made my advertisers happy for today, which pays the bills to keep the virtual lights on. Go on click it, help a random collection of 1′s and 0′s and me out (BTW: Thanks for helping).
